I learned about fertility awareness from a friend and a borrowed book back in 1995 and I must say it was the chats with a friend that made the difference, I wouldn’t have made the leap without that.
I was sceptical – my mum was a nurse, my husband is a scientist and I was a health librarian. But of course it did work and we’ve used it ever since – one child on purpose (our fabulous daughter) and no accidents.
In 2011, after being told it doesn’t work for the zillionth time, I decided to train as a Fertility UK practitioner. Since then I have taught many women (and their partners) about fertility awareness, as well as doing my other work in an NHS mental health trust communications team.
I’ve worked with religious couples, single women, women who’ve had abortions and women with tricky cycles thanks to health issues. I love teaching folk about fertility awareness and learning from those that I work with.
Being able to rely on yourself and your judgement to work out when you are fertile is a powerful, liberating and often quite healing thing.
At the same time I love keeping things as simple as possible – and I know fertility awareness is not the right choice for everyone. Your contraception should fit with your life – not the other way round.
